At a hotel: share an existing connection
A router in repeater mode connects to the hotel Wi-Fi and creates your local network. It does not provide independent internet access: if the hotel's network is unavailable, this mode will not fix the outage.
Before choosing, check whether the model supports this mode, how it is powered and whether its size is justified for your devices.

Without Wi-Fi: phone or SIM hotspot
For occasional use, start by checking your phone's tethering feature and your mobile plan's terms. A Wi-Fi router without a built-in cellular modem does not become a 4G or 5G hotspot simply because it advertises Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7.
For a standalone device, explicitly check the modem, SIM or eSIM compatibility, local networks, data plan and battery. Compare the full cost with your actual travel needs.
Captive portal: check before you leave
Some hotels require a sign-in or acceptance of terms on a web page before providing internet access. The process depends on the router and its software; GL.iNet's documentation describes this situation and possible difficulties.
Check the model's instructions and the hotel's rules. The label 'travel router' does not guarantee automatic connection at every hotel.
VPN and security: understand the limits
A router does not automatically secure every use. A compatible VPN needs configuration; its service, settings and updates still need checking. Do not choose solely based on a Wi-Fi standard or an advertised speed.
